Small Images
For Websites
Small images for websites are either created or purchased. Here you will learn the settings to create your own with free software.
Images for websites should be fast loading for display. Computer screens only require images to be set at 72 DPI. (Dots per inch) Print images need to be set at 250 – 300 DPI which gives a quality image for printing.
If you don’t have a camera then the easiest method is to purchase the use of an image from a Stock Photo Bank. These can be purchased at very reasonable prices. As little as $10 can purchase just that “right image”. Options are for sole use of an image which is a lot more expensive, or simply for use, which is fine for most websites.
Sole usuage is required normally by bigger corporations who want to use that image solely for their purposes on a variety of their promotional material and never want to ever see the same image elsewhere.
With a large amount of stock photo banks the chance of ever seeing the same image on different websites is practically nil.
Have your own camera ? Create your own
Irfanview is a free software available for you to download to downsize or optimise your images or create even smaller pictures called thumbnails.
The DPI setting on some digital cameras is “email quality” and the general upper limit for either email or on webpages is a size 640 x 480 pixels. These being the largest that should be put on a webpage and only used when you want a smaller image to click through to a large image. For general display on a webpage without using thumbnails a size anywhere between 150 pixels either height or width to 300 pixels is big enough to have a reasonable view.
