Links incoming to your website are a large part of your web page rank. The higher the rank of the website that gives you a link the more that link is valued by search engines. This means a few really great ones beats a lot of lower page rank links.

The reason for this is what is called search engine algorithms. Worked out by search engine programmers in response to website developers “dirty tricks ” or unthinking.

Things that no longer work to increase page rank

• Swap links – I’ll link to your website and you link to mine
• Links from directories or search engines that demand a link in return
• Links from some directories

A few years ago most websites had a links page. Sometimes they were related type of content or something that really interested the website owner, or for tourism, other activities in the area. Then the links pages starting being abused. The links were followed by a search engine indexing a website (for search engine database)and of course by real visitors.

Swapped or mutual links, these days, from another ordinary website is generally seen and actioned by search engines for exactly what they are and are given little relevance or importance in their complex algorithms. Search engines will still index those website links, visitors may still follow them, but they do nothing to help build your website rank/importance.
